BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES A test-development position is available in the Verbal and Writing Skills Assessment areas, which concentrate on assessments of writing and reading skills at the middle-school, high-school, and/or college levels.
An academic background in the humanities is desirable for this position, although applicants with specialties in related disciplines will also be considered. Applicants must have extensive expertise in analyzing, writing, and editing texts; experience with constructed-response (essay) assessments and holistic scoring would also be helpful. Test Creation Write and review items, gather and resolve feedback from multiple sources on items; evaluate item acceptability after testing. Participate in constructed-response scoring activities, including work with faculty consultants or state department staff. Recruit, train, mentor, and manage outside item writers; help develop item writer training materials; assist with facilitation of item writer training meetings. Assist in design and development of new assessments and innovative products and services; assist in development of blueprints. Assemble pretests, tests, and assist in the preparation of Special Test Editions. Respond to irregularity reports and candidate inquiries, investigate possible copyright violations, and may review and make recommendations for security cases. Assist client committees, including organizing meetings, recommending committee members, and explaining and summarizing analysis results. Review and revise program publications and interpretive test preparation materials; participate in teacher training activities. Assist with reliability, validity or comparability studies. Apply knowledge of item statistics to evaluation of items and assembly of tests. Leadership Assist with test development activities as a member of one or more program teams, possibly as a member of a test creation team. May serve on committees at the junior level. Administration Assist in project direction; help implement item development plans; work on special development projects.
Experience and Skills
EDUCATION A Master’s degree in the humanities or in a related academic field is required. EXPERIENCE Three years of professional experience in middle school, high school, and/or college-level teaching, in writing, in editing, and/or in developing assessments. Other requirements include: Highly sophisticated writing and editing skills; Detailed knowledge about the technical aspects of composition, including the principles of syntax, grammar, usage, and mechanics; Ability to analyze texts with precision, acuity, and subtlety; Ability to work both collaboratively and autonomously; Experience in using basic software applications and Internet searches. Helpful: Experience in teaching and assessing composition at the college level Ability to analyze the qualities of essay responses very perceptively and to articulate that analysis lucidly Understanding of informal argumentation Experience in holistic scoring
